Thomas David “T. D.” Ruth is a partner at Serling Rooks Hunter McKoy Worob & Averill LLP. He started his entertainment law practice in 2005, preceded by nearly a decade of experience in the music industry and a diverse background in entrepreneurship and new venture creation.
Prior to starting his law practice, T. D.’s background in the music business includes artist management, talent buying, concert production, and concert promotion. Additionally, in 2003 he established one of the first digital distribution companies, which focused on offering high quality, “lossless” digital audio. As a frontrunner in the industry, T. D. developed innovative consumer licenses to eliminate the need for digital rights management mechanisms. He also fostered relationships with major mechanical rights licensors to enable artists to release recordings of live performances within minutes of a show.
In his law practice, T. D.’s clients have a strong global presence. This includes Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum RIAA recording artists, songwriters, producers, independent record labels, and music publishers, predominantly in the pop, rock, indie, country, and gospel genres. He also represents professional athletes, actors, and fashion models, for which he leverages their brands and develops merchandising opportunities. Additionally, T. D. has assisted many start-up software companies and music businesses in refining their business models and identifying risks and alternative revenue opportunities. Furthermore, T. D. represents entertainment and business clients in trademark matters and issues concerning rights of publicity and privacy.
